About

Hannaleah Ledwell is a multidisciplinary artist born and based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. Her current work focuses on the relationship between visual and sensorial memory translated through the lens of oil painting. She examines notions of intimacy, interiority and the representation of the body as ever fluctuating, mutable and constantly in motion. She studied at the University of Lapland, Finland and Concordia University, Montreal from where she graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.

Focusing on intimacy with oneself and others, Ledwell seeks to convey tangible bodily sensations born of emotion. She examines the visceral nature of touch, the softness of a caress, the blossoming of pleasure, all through the perspective of autobiographical memory.

Living with multiple chronic illnesses, Ledwell is acutely aware of her own body, its physiology, its fluctuations and the sensations provoked by the smallest imbalances. The perpetual self-observation informs her practice, giving her the capacity to work from visual and muscle memory; it grants her the ability to transport herself to a precise instant and immerse herself completely in the sensations experienced at that particular point in time.

Ledwell uses this mental imagery to recall profoundly intimate moments and sensations. By revealing her innermost experiences, Ledwell aims to prompt the viewer to reflect on their own vulnerability, their own love languages, and how we all experience and share these deeply human feelings.
